The Central Applications Office (CAO) is the system used to apply for most full-time undergraduate courses in Ireland, and to get the most out of the process it is important to understand how it works. Take the time to research the courses that interest you carefully, not just in terms of the specific entry requirements for each one, but to make sure your application reflects your true preferences. If anything is unclear, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
The CAO (Central Applications Office) is the system used to apply for almost all full-time undergraduate courses in Ireland. Instead of applying separately to each college or university, you fill out one online application on the CAO website. You can list up to 20 courses in order of preference: ten level 8 (honours degrees) and ten Level 6/7 (higher certificates and ordinary degrees). You should always put the course that you want the most first, because offers are made in order of preference once you meet the requirements.
After the application deadlines pass, the CAO sends your details to the colleges, who check if you meet their entry requirements. When results come out (from the Leaving Cert, QQI Level 5, or other qualifications), the CAO calculates your points and offers you the highest preference course that you qualify for.
The CAO has a demo application that you can take a look at here.
It is very worthwhile to get a second set of eyes on your form and your course list, so please book in to the guidance room if you would like some help.
The CAO deadlines can be found here. Check back for the updated 2025-26 timetable of events.
The cost of your CAO application increases the longer you wait. It is worthwhile making an early application -- most applicants can use the change of mind facility if needs be. For 2025, the cost was as follows:
Early online application (discounted) €30: 20 January 2025 at 5pm
Normal online application €45: 1 February 2025 at 5pm
Late online application – restrictions apply €60: 1 May 2025 at 5pm
Change of Mind – restrictions apply €0: 1 July 2025 at 5pm
Check the link above for updated 2025-26 dates.
In most cases, yes!
However, if you are applying for a restricted course, you cannot use the change of mind facility, and if you are applying as a mature student, you will need to check very carefully whether it is permitted or not. Some universities do not allow amendments to your CAO form beyond the 1st of February deadline, so if you are a mature student, make sure to check.
